Gert De Rijk Pottery Charger G O Sayles Historian Glasgow University Scotland

Description
A really most interesting and unique ceramic charger decorated with the coat of arms for the University of Glasgow. As you can see from the photos there are also the words Via Veritas Vita which means The Way, The Truth, The Life which is the motto for the University of Glasgow. In view of the information on the back of this charger I have done some research. George Osborne Sayles was a well known English Historian 1901 - 1994  (see Wikipedia and other articles on the internet) who studied at the University of Glasgow and then held the position of Assistant in History at Glasgow University 1924-1925 before moving to other Universities and holding senior positions. It appears he maintained many links to Glasgow and it's University which may indicate why he had this charger made. On the back of the charger are also the initials for Gert De Rijk who was a Dutch ceramist who made this charger. He was born in 1945 and died in 2009 but this charger is marked 79 which I am sure is for 1979. There is also information re Gert De Rijk and images of his work on the internet. So it appears that Gert De Rijk was commissioned to make this charger for George Osborne Sayles to perhaps commemorate his time at Glasgow University.

Condition. Very good with no damage. It has 2 holes for some wire so that it can be hung on the wall.

Approx Size. Diameter 14.25 inches. Depth just over 2 inches.
